Desperate times call for instant cake mix...

(This story is from last spring after reading it, it's no wonder I forgot to publish it!!)
“We’ve been playing hopscotch with 3 legs. Desperate times call for instant cake mix.”
Now I’ll tell you who spewed out this incredible quotable quote and how he happened to mention it. It was my youngest son and this quotable quote came from him after this kind of day....... My dear sweet lovable dog has an abscess, so he has to wear a cone on his head. He wanted out pretty bad this morning so I let him out when I got up. I quickly slipped on some clothes and went out to check on him. He was gone. I was horrified and grabbed my oldest son and said, “Jump in the car and drive down the highway and see if you can find him!” I ran inside and grabbed 2 leashes and let the other dog loose. I said, “Find Patches.” He sniffed around the front yard and back moving fast with his nose to the ground. He can’t stand it when he misses out on the fun. And Patches has a nose that lands him in trouble! Finally, Red Dog decided to head down the driveway. It's a loooong steep drive. I couldn’t follow. I got a Charlie Horse in my calf. So, called him back and drafted 2 more dog chasers. My eldest was coming up the driveway in the van with the dog however. So we all calmed down. Now to put a warm compress on the dog and give him some pills. He took them without too much trouble. Now, we’re 30 minutes from a town big enough to have a Walmart, so my daughter’s tire is bald and the car shouldn’t be driven. I need to get new tires very soon. I ate some breakfast and gave the dog 3 pills. My son had an orthodontist appointment and I had to drop off our computer for repair in town since the lightning storm last night had blown it out. Could be fried. At least no trees came down during the storm like the one last week. That one just missed the barn. Hallelujah! It did smash my pile of neatly stacked spare bricks however. So, anyway, for the trip to town, we picked the ancient custom van which has a history of car problems. (Surprisingly, we didn’t have car trouble, but I do need to get a new wiper blade. One of the brand new ones flew off in a storm. Needed to get a new wiper pronto). I needed to grade some school papers desperately. Yesterday the phone rang so much I couldn’t get one math problem graded. I was on the phone trying to find out where the insurance adjuster was and fielding calls from salesmen, my husband, my daughter and my dad, and had to write a note to a college recruiter about complicated financial aid issues for my daughter for the Fall. Plus had to make a call about cabinets for a bathroom we were remodeling. Drat, I forgot, I needed to call the window people since windows are under warranty. They should cover the broken seal. The adjuster was running late. We had had 2 plumbing leaks in my bedroom and closet and had moved all the furniture out of the bedroom and into the living room and also emptied the closet. the belongings in my closet are distributed to the coat closets, boxes and other bedroom closets.the adjuster wanted to look at the carpet to see if it needed to be replaced. We were having some transportation issues, because I had to get my son to the Community College to study for a test after the orthodontist. One of my daughters was already in class at that institution and those 2 students and my youngest had rehearsals for the musical that night. We had to make arrangements for my youngest daughter to get to the college for the rehearsal also. My college daughter would come back home after some classes, take the youngest girl with her to her last class before they went to rehearsal together. After the orthodontist appointment and dropping off the computer we headed to the college. I talked to the director at the Baptist Collegiate ministry about the cost for the conference coming up that the kids wanted to attend. We got that worked out and I headed home. My eldest daughter was home and made me some lunch. I taught a grammar lesson to my budding actress/musician and graded some school, then I remembered I had to give the dog an Epsom salt bath, you know, the abscess. So after the bathing ordeal with the dog, I put my feet up to sketch a while and put the heating pad on my Charlie Horse. Since half of the kids will be at drama rehearsal, and 2 will gone this weekend, we won’t see much of each other for a few days. Anyway, my husband is working in a town 7 and ½ hours away and I won’t see him for 2 weeks, however, he actually managed to mail me 2 birthday cards that arrived today, and my eldest daughter fried me a hamburger for my supper! Oh no! My college girl is telling me that her back pack is missing. It’s only worth like $500 since it’s full of school books! Well, one more warm compress on the dog tonight and then his meds. This has been a typical day as of late. Well, I love hamburgers. That’s my consolation tonight, and I’m going to read my birthday cards again! Maybe someone will mix up that instant cake mix, but... I don't think it will be me!!
