For Teachers at Home: Frugal homeschooling: Buying several Unit Studies is a cost effective method for elementary. Using a Unit Study lends itself to adaptation and we almost always used a unit study with several different age groups, modifying it some. For instance, if you bought "Teacher Created Resources: A Guide for Using Frog and Toad Are Friends," (“Frog and Toad are Friends,” book by Arnold Lobel) then you could check the book out from the library and also check out books on frogs' habitat and lifecycle. This saves $ by not having to buy the readers and gets you and your kids out of the house a little! We shopped at large used bookstores and library sales also for books. For this study, for instance, the teacher can print off coloring pages from the internet on the lifecycle of frogs, and study dragonflies also or pond creatures. A Unit Study will usually have some math, and science incorporated into it, but not enough to fill a year, so we always added to it. You can pull your spelling words from the reading and use a FREE online spelling app. There are loads of handwriting books to choose from, also. You can even find them at Walmart.
